Rowanston on the Track Winery is situated on the famous Burke and Wills track. We purchased Rowanston in 2003 and since that time have established a successful winery, winning medals for our wines as well as exporting to the USA. The most recent awards include a gold medal and best red wine for the 2007 shiraz and a silver medal for the 2009 Riesling at the Daylesford Wine Show. The very popular Sparkling Pinot, blanc de noir won medals at both shows.
We do the majority of work on this 23 acres of vines but at times employ help in the vineyard and winery to support this 'hobby out of control'. We also tend 400 olive trees and produce angus beef on this 800 acre property. One of our loves is the 200 acres of bush land at the rear of the property fenced off for wildlife to flourish. When ever we get the chance we escape to a special place on the bush land, boil the billy, barbecue a few sausages and crack open a bottle of wine.
Life in the winemaking industry began in 1990 with a small planting of shiraz grapes at our first property – Metcalfe Valley at Metcalfe, also in the north of Macedon Ranges Wine Region. Some first successes in winemaking encouraged us to broaden our horizons and in 2003 we purchased Rowanston.
Today we export wine to Oregon in the USA as well as sell most of our wine to local restaurants and hotels. Our Cellar door is open 7 days where you are almost guaranteed to meet the winemaker (John) or the viticulturist (Marilyn) and enjoy wine tastings along with some cheese, or our olive oil and bread as well as some friendly conversation. You will also probably take a stroll through the winery enjoying some barrel tastings and may even stay the night in our cosy bed and breakfast.
