Lane's End Vineyard was originally planted in the mid 1980's making it one of the more mature vineyards in the region. Situated at 570m in the Mt.William area on the South side of the Dividing Range. The vineyard is planted out to Chardonnay & Pinot Noir (4 clones ) and through careful management the crop yield is kept to a low level to ensure concentration and complexity in our wines – ONE ton per acre in the Pinot & 2 tons per acre in the Chardonnay.
Our wines are made with the common theme of minimal intervention & gentleness in the handling of the must/wine. Gentle destemming of the grape bunches is followed by an extended cold soak before the wild yeasts begin the Pinot fermentation which brings about a more complex wine. Gentle basket pressing is then employed so as not to create any hard edges to the wine.
A mixture of new, one and two year old Frenck oak barrels are used (Troncais & Alier oak) to then store the Pinot. Minimal racking and low Sulphur levels are also integral to the finishing of the wine. Similarly the Chardonnay is handled minimally going through its fermentation in barrel with stirring at three weekly intervals to increase the complexity of the wine. Stelvin closures are used for their simplicity, eradication of cork taint problems & their ability to keep the wine in perfect condition whilst it matures over time.
