Planted in 1972 Zig Zag Rd. was the third vineyard established in the Macedon Ranges Region. It consists of 1000 Cabernet Sauvignon, 1200 Shiraz, 300 Merlot and 350 Pinot Noir vines which are now 35yrs old. Another 170 Pinot and 300 Riesling were planted in 1995 and a further 750 Merlot and 1000 Riesling by the present owners in 2003 & 2004/5 respectively.
This is a dryland vineyard with no irrigation. All the work is done by family and friends. The wine is fermented in open 1000litre vats and pressed using a basket press.
The vineyard is most picturesque with the undulating slopes of vines giving way to grazing flats and the State Forest beyond. In winter the black faced Suffolk sheep graze under the vines giving birth to their black lambs.
One can sit out on the deck, or behind the glass with the pot belly fired up, and enjoy a sumptuous platter with a glass of excellent wine and relax and watch the world go by.
